What Is a High Cube Storage Container

Before we compare high cube and standard storage containers, let’s first define a high cube container. A high cube container (HC Container) is one of the most common shipping container types, and it is used worldwide to store and ship all kinds of goods.

As you may guess, a high cube container is taller than the standard unit. The height difference is exactly one (1) foot of additional space. A high cube container can ship the same dry goods as a regular container and measures 40 feet long.

Why do some people prefer the high cube container, and what are its benefits? The obvious benefit is that a high cube container is taller than a standard container with more storage space.



A high cube container is especially beneficial for those who need to ship something in one piece, but the goods are too tall or awkwardly proportioned to fit inside a standard container. A high cube container may be the choice for you if you need more height for your cargo.

Pro Tip: If you’re using a shipping container for business, housing, or storage, a high cube container offers more height for wiring and plumbing if necessary.

High Cube vs. Standard Shipping Container

The high cube and standard containers each have unique advantages to offer buyers. Both come in the same length size of 40 feet and the same width, but a high cube container is nine and a half feet tall, whereas a standard container is eight and a half feet tall.

That extra foot may not seem like much, but it means a 40-foot high cube container has a storage capacity of 2,681 cubic feet, while a standard 40-foot new shipping container can hold only 2,377 cubic feet. There is a tradeoff, of course, to this height advantage—a high cube container weighs more and typically costs more than the standard container.
