Louisville manufacturing industries use cargo worthy containers to export their goods. In October 2021,
Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) reopened a Louisville, Kentucky, intermodal terminal to transport ocean cargo containers to the Port of Virginia.
Medical and other donations are noteworthy exports from Louisville. Moreover, Kentucky bourbon is a frequent Louisville export.
Exports of distilled spirits from Kentucky grew to $488.6 million in 2019 but dropped during the 2020 pandemic because of high tariffs. In all, 95% of the world’s bourbon is produced in Kentucky.
However, top Kentucky exports by dollar amount also include:
In 2021, the top export destinations from Kentucky were:
As an exporter, you can buy a shipping container and then load, seal, and ship your goods overseas in your own container. Many Louisville area industries do just this.
Containers owned by the shipping company must remain at the port, particularly in countries with embargoes.
By contrast, if you buy your own shipping containers, exported goods in sealed cargo containers can be transported the entire distance—from their original location (often the manufacturer) to their final destination (usually the end-seller)—without loading and unloading goods between legs of the journey.
This saves money and time in two ways:
Furthermore, all containers traveling overseas must be certified for their seaworthiness. If you plan to export goods, Container Management Inc. will work with surveyors who can appropriately certify your containers for ocean shipping.
We can help you make the import/export process work.
On land, shipping containers have advanced the Kentucky economy and standard of living. For example, the “Opportunity Center” has been home to customized shipping containers that serve as offices and a resource center for entrepreneurs in the Russell community in west Louisville since 2019.
Many shipping containers are transformed into homes.
For example, upcycled shipping containers became a 25-unit tiny home community for homeless Kentucky veterans. Located near Dixie Highway and Stuart Avenue, the community is called Camp Restoration and broke ground in March 2020.
Furthermore, Kentucky Habitat for Humanity says it can offer shipping container homes for about half the cost of a typical Habitat home. This provides an alternative for Kentucky retirees and others with the most limited incomes in the Blue Grass area.
Habitat for Humanity also built shipping container homes in West Liberty, Kentucky, an Appalachian town where more than 18 percent of the population lives in poverty. Hardin County Habitat for Humanity also built homes from shipping containers near E-town.
However, not all shipping container homes are modest, tiny homes. Three 40-foot shipping containers comprise the 1280-square-foot, three-bedroom, 1.5-bath home at Logan and East Breckenridge Streets in Louisville’s Smoketown neighborhood.
Moreover, the hip, artsy neighborhood of NuLu is home to shipping container rental homes. The four housing rentals made from customized shipping containers at South Wenzel and East Jefferson Streets in Derby City became available in 2022. Two of these Phoenix Hill neighborhood rentals are residential homes, and two are available on Airbnb.
Likewise, Lexington, Ky, is home to shipping container apartments built with stacked shipping containers. Three of these four apartments are Airbnb rentals.
Furthermore, Kentucky contractors often buy our shipping containers for offices in shipping yards, at construction sites, and other temporary worksites.
However, Kentuckians have dedicated shipping containers to other uses besides exports, homes, and construction offices. These include container farms, restaurants, bars, and storage.
Shipping containers in Kentucky also serve as hydroponic farms that can grow greens year-round.
For instance, Frederick Douglas High School in Lexington, Ky, has a container farm that teaches Kentucky teens about agriculture. Likewise, Madison Central High School students in Richmond, Ky., grow produce on campus in a shipping container. AppHarvest, an AgTech company in Kentucky, sponsored both projects. It plans to build 12 indoor farms in Appalachia by 2024. One container grows 13,000 plants.
Bullitt County’s Shepherdsville, Ky., also had a vertical shipping container farm. However, the tech-based farm company that owned the facility, Square Roots, abruptly closed this and three other out-of-state container farms in July 2023.
Louisville veterans grow lettuce, herbs, and leafy greens in another shipping container farm near Spring Street in the Irish Hill Neighborhood. The container is only 40 feet long. But it grows up to three acres of vertical crops.
In Ashland, Ky, a family built its restaurant, Cargo House Pizza, out of two shipping containers.
Similarly, plans are underway for a volleyball bar made of shipping containers. Two volleyball courts will grace either side of the Sandbar, a shipping container bar on Louisville’s East End.
Many Louisville-area businesses and individuals use shipping containers for storage. Climate-controlled shipping containers in Kentucky store records, office equipment, and other items that no longer fit in crowded offices. These containers also stow documents and gear when offices are eliminated or downsized.
Furthermore, shipping containers become business warehouses, especially during peak production times. They hold both raw and finished goods. Some distillers are even considering aging Kentucky bourbon in barrels in shipping containers.
Other businesses buy shipping containers to rent the space to companies or individuals. Individuals with land buy shipping containers to keep on their property as extensions of their garages or sheds.

One of the Most Comfortable/Secure Transactions I Have Been Able to Execute
"After exhaustive searching for the appropriate source for my shipping container needs, the team at Container Management, Inc has performed spectacularly. Most searches online were chatbot contact only, payment requested before speaking to a real person & you couldn't even see where the containers were stored.
I was able to call Les with Container Management, Inc. & speak to him personally. He was able to explain the container market to me, explained where and when I could get my containers, either delivered or I could pick them up myself. One of the must comfortable/secure transactions I have been able to execute online. I hope to continue utilizing Container Management, Inc in the future."
