How Much Does it Cost to Buy a 40-foot Shipping Container?

Shipping container prices vary widely and depend on many factors.

Some of the many variables that determine shipping container pricing include:

  • Shipping container size
  • Shipping container condition and grades
  • Specialized Shipping containers (non-Standard)
  • Geographical location of the container
  • Market conditions affecting availability

Used shipping containers are sold as they’re depreciated off of the steamship line inventories. 40-foot shipping containers are the most common containers sold today.

Currently in 2024, used 40-foot standard containers can start as low as $1,500, but can cost as much as $2,100 in markets where supply is scarce.

Used 40-foot, High Cube shipping container prices currently vary from a low of $1,700 to $2,200, depending on grade and location.

New, One-trip 40-foot container prices range anywhere from $3,600 to $4,200, depending on availability. During container shortages, you may see prices more than double those averages in many markets.

New, One-trip 40-foot, High Cube shipping container prices currently vary from a low of $3,600 to $4,200, depending on grade and location.

Specialized Used and New 40-foot shipping container prices vary even more by location. During container shortages, we’ve seen prices more than double those averages in many markets.

How to Buy A 40-foot Shipping Container

Our process is personalized to best meet your individual container needs.

Buying shipping containers is a seamless process with our efficient, customized system.

At Container Management, Inc., we ensure that you get the container size and grade that best meets your specific needs.

Step 1: Complete Our Quote Request Form

Our quote form ensures you provide us with the important details:

  • How many containers?
  • New or Used?
  • Do you want us to deliver the container?
  • Where do you want to place the container:  City, State, Zip Code
  • What grade container?
  • Storage or Export?
  • Your email address and phone number

Step 2: You Receive Our Quote

We email you back the same business day with our quote provided we receive your quote request by 4:00 PM EST, Monday through Friday.

We will email you back the next business day with our quote if we receive your quote request later than 4:00 PM EST, Monday through Friday.

Our quote is based on current inventory levels at the depot site(s) closest to your delivery location. Inventory at each depot site is subject to change.  Prices are based on current availability. Once current inventory is depleted, prices may vary with the next inventory replenishment.

We offer some of the most competitive wholesale pricing on the market by quoting according to current inventory availability.

Step 3: Your Purchase

You provide us with a purchase order or email indicating your intent to purchase.

We will confirm your purchase by reserving your container size and grade at the nearest depot location. You’ll get the next container off the stack at the depot that meets your order criteria.

We can’t guarantee a specific color, but all of our containers are warrantied to be wind and watertight at the time of delivery.

We require payment in full at this point before moving to Step 4 Delivery or Pick-Up.

Our Operations Team will be in touch within one business day to confirm your order and accept payment.

Once your order has been paid for in full, they will coordinate the logistics of your shipping container delivery or depot pick-up.

Step 4: Ground Level Container Delivery or Depot Pick-Up

For delivery:  We work with professional local transport companies with specialized equipment to deliver your container directly to the ground.

You’ll know what day your container delivery is scheduled for within a day or two of placing your order, and the driver will give you a call when they’re en route on the day of delivery.

Plan on 4 to 7 business days for shipping container purchases.

Learn more about our delivery service here.

For depot pick-up:  After purchase, we will provide you with a release number and pick-up information. You can then immediately go to the designated depot on the release and have the container loaded on your truck.

We’re happy to load your truck at the depot if you have the proper equipment to safely transport a shipping container.

Please be aware you are required to comply with all DOT and OSHA rules while at the depot and Container Management, Inc. cannot be liable for any issues during transport.

Option: If you’re purchasing your container for export

If you’re buying a shipping container to be used for export, you can add a CSC Survey to your purchase (please note, surveys add 3-5 business days to the normal timeline).

We are happy to provide a cargo worthy (CW) container, as well as coordinate an export certification from a licensed surveyor at the depot prior to your trucker picking up the container. Learn more about ocean export shipments here.
