In this article, we’ll give you cost estimates for shipping containers of various sizes and conditions.
In addition, it’s helpful to know that the cost of a shipping container depends on many factors.
Some of the many variables that determine shipping container pricing include:
We’ll explore each of these variables in more detail. But first, here’s an overview of shipping container cost ranges in 2024.

Understanding shipping container costs is crucial whether you're planning to buy for storage, shipping, or a custom project. Prices vary depending on several factors including size, condition, and modifications.
Here, we'll break down the costs for both new and used containers. These ranges are based on current market conditions (summer 2024).
New shipping containers are pristine, and in most cases they’ve only made one trip from the manufacturer to their current location. This "one-way" journey means the container is in excellent condition, free from the wear and tear associated with frequent use.
Here’s the breakdown of costs for new shipping containers:
New Container Type | New Container Cost (Summer 2024) |
---|---|
20-foot New One-Way Container | $2400 - $2700 |
40-foot New High Cube One-Way | $3600 - $4200 |
So is buying a new shipping container worth it? If you have sensitive storage needs or want to convert the container into a living space, then longevity and integrity should be a top priority.
Looking for a cost-effective alternative to new shipping containers? Used containers are ideal for budget-conscious buyers or less demanding applications.
So how much does a used shipping container cost? Just like new containers, they vary in price based on their condition and overall dimensions. Used container condition ratings include Cargo Worthy (CW), Wind & Watertight (WWT), or As-is.
Here’s a breakdown of the cost for used shipping containers:
20-foot Used Container Type | 20-foot Used Container Cost (Summer 2024) |
---|---|
20-foot Used - Cargo Worthy Container | $1400 - $1800 |
20-foot Used - Wind & Watertight (WWT) | $1300 - $1600 |
40-foot Used Container Type | 40-foot Used Container Cost (Summer 2024) |
---|---|
40-foot Used - Cargo Worthy | $1600 - $2100 |
40-foot Used - Wind & Watertight | $1500 - $2000 |
40-foot Used - High Cube - Cargo Worthy | $1800 - $2200 |
40-foot Used - High Cube - Wind & Watertigh | $1700 - $2100 |
CW containers can be certified for export shipping, meaning they can withstand the rigors of sea travel, and all of the major steamship lines will accept them for transit on their ships.
WWT containers cannot be certified for export shipping, but are ideal for storage as they are sealed against wind and water.
High Cube containers offer an additional one (1) foot of height over standard height containers. This makes them perfect if you have a limited base area and want to increase the vertical space.
Container Management, Inc. does not sell As-Is condition containers.
Choosing the right size is critical as it impacts both cost and usability.
The 20-foot, 40-foot, and 40-foot High Cube containers are the most common sizes for shipping containers that are to be used for export shipment or for storage.
Both sizes are large enough to hold a substantial amount of freight and fit into loading slots on container ships. Tractor trailers that pick up containers for ground transport are also built to hold 20- and 40-foot containers.
Smaller 10-foot standard size, or a custom size container may actually be more expensive than standard 20-foot and 40-foot containers. The fact that these smaller containers aren’t as common also means they’re less available for purchase.
You can either opt to purchase a new, one-way shipping container, or a used container. The condition of a shipping container significantly affects its suitability and price.
New containers have had a one-way loaded move from the manufacturer overseas to North America. This guarantees cleanliness and structural integrity, which makes them perfect for transforming into homes or offices.
Used containers have been used in international container shipping for an average of 18 to 22 years. They are graded as Cargo Worthy, Windwater Tight or As Is.
As previously mentioned, Container Management, Inc. never sells As-Is condition containers.
As a general rule of thumb, a used 40-foot standard container will be priced around 30% more than a used 20-foot container, of the same condition. A used 40-foot High Cube (HC) container will be priced on average 10-20% higher than a used standard 40-foot unit of the same condition.
On the other hand, new container prices can range anywhere from 60-80% higher than their used counterparts.
The cost of shipping containers can also vary based on their geographical location. For instance, containers located at ports or major logistic hubs tend to be less expensive due to lower transportation costs.
That said, prices may increase for locations further from these hubs due to added shipping and handling fees.
Container Management, Inc. inventories shipping containers at more than 32 depot sites across the country.
Customizing a container can transform it from a basic storage unit to a fully functional space built for your specific needs.
Here are some of the common modifications people like to include on their custom new or used shipping container:
As you might expect, the more modifications you add, the bigger the impact will be on your shipping container cost.

Delivery costs depend on the distance from our nearest depot to your delivery location. Generally, deliveries beyond 200 miles will involve a flat-bed truck, which will require that you lift the container off the truck.
Container Management staff will work with you to determine the ideal depot location for your container needs.
With so many depot inventory site options situated across the country, we’ll strive to keep your container shipping cost as low as possible by accessing your container from the depot nearest your delivery site.
Another cost-saving feature is our tilt-bed trucks, which can hold two 20’ containers together on a single load. As a result, we can help you reduce the delivery cost by accommodating multiple units in a single trip rather than two separate deliveries.
For large-scale projects or bulk orders, we offer competitive volume discounts on a single invoice.
This pricing structure benefits businesses looking to expand their storage capabilities or embark on large construction projects with multiple containers.
Moreover, because we sell containers at wholesale prices, our everyday pricing is some of the most competitive in the industry.
Supply Chain conditions can also greatly affect container availability and pricing.
For example, during the pandemic, a shortage of containers and a sharp spike in demand strained the capacity of the shipping industry. That led to container shipping prices double and triple what they had been only a few months before.
With all of these factors weighing in on the price of a shipping container, it is important that you call us to receive a personalized quote that meets your direct needs.
