Learn about cargo-worthy and wind-watertight containers.
Cleveland exported $59.9B of goods in 2022 alone. Among other exports, Cleveland businesses shipped millions of dollars each of aircraft parts, integrated circuits, medical instruments, orthopedic appliances, communication devices, and more. These goods went mainly to Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Mexico.
Many Cleveland area industries buy containers to export goods. These shipper-owned containers can be less costly and more practical.
Furthermore, all containers traveling overseas must be certified for their seaworthiness. Container Management Inc. works with surveyors who can appropriately certify your containers for ocean shipping.
You can store, seal, and ship your goods overseas by owning your containers. Moreover, goods in sealed containers can be transported from their origin to their destination.
This saves money and time in two ways.
First, no per diem charge is necessary when your container remains at your or your customer’s facility.
Second, it avoids the cost of unloading and reloading goods at the destination port. By contrast, steamships usually require you to keep their containers at the port in countries where embargoes are in place.
We can help you make the import/export process work.
In addition to buying cargo-worthy containers, Cleveland area businesses also purchase shipping containers for storage.
More than 12,000 manufacturers call the Buckeye state home. Similar to other Ohio industries, Cleveland manufacturers must store their goods and raw materials. For many, that means buying shipping containers—especially when product demand is high.
Many Cleveland-area businesses use shipping containers to extend their workspaces. These businesses use climate-controlled shipping containers for office use and to store records, office equipment, and other items that no longer fit in their offices. They also stow records in shipping containers and equipment when traditional offices have been eliminated or downsized in favor of working from home.
Cleveland retail stores extend their warehousing for holiday and other seasonal goods using shipping containers they keep in parking lots behind their stores.
People own a lot of stuff. For example, the average American home has 300,000 items. For many, self-storage is a good alternative when households want to declutter but don’t want to donate or trash items.
Self-storage is increasingly a big business in Ohio and throughout the United States. And Cleveland self-storage is no exception. In 2023, Cleveland was home to more than 1.7 million square feet of storage space—an average of 2.3 sq. ft. for every person in Clevland. The market grew 6.8 percent from 2022.
Many of those who buy shipping containers from us have storage businesses. They purchase the containers and then rent them to others.
However, businesses aren’t the only ones buying shipping containers. They are also popular purchases among individuals—especially those with the land to accommodate the steel containers.
Those with several acres add new or used storage containers to their back lots to store various. Furniture, including beds, tables, chairs, and other furnishings, are the most common items stored. Seasonal storage, old electronics, books, artwork, appliances, and music and sports equipment are also popular items in shipping containers.
Holiday decorations grace many shipping containers, and 84% of Americans decorate for Christmas.
Fun fact: Do you know the most popular holiday decoration in Ohio? It’s the snowman.
However, when Frosty is made of plastic or inflatable polyester, he needs a place to call home three seasons of the year.
Other Buckeyes are holding onto items for their young adult children, temporarily living overseas, out-of-season clothes, or those between homes.
Shipping containers also offer an opportunity to store hard-to-part-from, often-inherited treasures, such as great-grandfather’s rocker, Aunt Hattie’s hand-carved hope chest, and grandma’s porcelain dishes.
Besides shipping cargo, business storage, and individual storage, here are some creative ways that Buckeyes have repurposed steel shipping containers.
The BoxSpot is an open-air market near Kinsmen Road and East 81st Street. Made of 10 stacked shipping containers, it includes shops and restaurants. It serves retail needs in a neighborhood that other businesses may overlook.
Healthcare is big business in Cleveland, especially with the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic calling Cleveland and nearby Beachwood home. Shipping containers are a part of healthcare, too.
They’ve been used as mobile medical units for blood donation, medical offices, and testing centers during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Lettuce Tree Farms grows microgreens and herbs east of downtown Cleveland. The crops are grown year-round in climate-controlled shipping containers.
Container homes are popular in Northeast Ohio, and many local construction companies design and build houses made of shipping containers. With low housing inventory, new construction is on the rise. Those who want a less expensive home more quickly are building container homes.
Many shipping container vacation “tiny home” rentals are available in Ohio. About an hour’s drive to Navarre, Ohio, you can stay at a tiny house on wheels.
Just 90 minutes from Cleveland, your tiny house options grow. You can stay in a shipping container treehouse in Millersburg or Berlin, Ohio. The Lux and The Scandi are also available in Millersburg. In Dover, you can rent an industrial shipping container house.
