Understanding Shipping Container Grades

Written by Susan Nalevac | December 03, 2021

Shipping containers are graded by quality and usability, not just their age or looks. The grade you choose impacts your container’s lifespan and potential.

Let’s break down the differences so that you can further your understanding of shipping container grades before making a purchase.

Brand New

Brand new containers (or one-trip containers) are newly made and ready for immediate use. New containers guarantee well-functioning doors. It’s important to understand, however, that not every new container is made the same.

Look for features and specifications that match your needs.

Cargo-Worthy

Cargo-worthy containers are used containers that are still in great condition. These containers are the highest grade available for used containers.

Cargo-worthy containers are ready to serve their intended purpose on a cargo ship after inspection and certification that ensures they’re up to the job. Keep in mind that aesthetics don’t factor into this grade.

Wind/Watertight

Wind/watertight containers, are typically between 14 and 18 years old, with many years still ahead of them.

While not as high-ranking as cargo-worthy containers, wind/watertight containers still offer the same interior protection and storage capabilities.

As-Is

As you look for a shipping container, you may notice shipping containers listed “As-Is.” These used containers are too faulty in some respect to achieve a grade at all.

Our team at Container Management, Inc. does not offer these containers.
